There are around 5 stages of this olympiad as per follows:-
Stage | Description |
Stage 1(National Standard Examination) | After the successful completion of the first stage, which is the National Standard Examinations (NSEs), the top-performing students (roughly 300 in each subject) advance to the Indian National Olympiads (INOs). The HBCSE takes over from this stage onwards. The INOs are held nationwide in approximately 18 centres in late January, with the same syllabus as the NSEs. The tests consist of multiple-choice and long-answer questions. |
Stage 2 (Indian National Olympiads) | The teams of talented young individuals representing India are selected to participate in international Olympiads. Before their departure, they undergo an extensive training program at HBCSE, which includes both theoretical and experimental teachings. |
Stage 3 (Orientation-cum-Selection Camps) | The best students from each subject in the Indian Olympiad are invited to attend the Orientation-cum-Selection Camps. These camps teach the students about theoretical, experimental, and observational tasks that will be needed to compete in the Olympiad. |
Stage 4 (Training Programme) | At the pinnacle of the Olympiad program, Indian students (averaging 4-6 each) partake in the International Olympiads, accompanied by a team of 2-4 teachers or mentors. The track record for Indian students in Science and Astronomy Olympiads is almost flawless, with almost every student who has taken part returning with an honorary medal. |
